View Full Version : Hit and run ruined my morning.

Well, obviously a lot more than just my morning. I'm really distressed about it, and just about messed myself when I came out this morning to the sight of it. Thursday is a huge party night around here (college town with at least a 5:1 student:not student ratio), and my car got pretty messed up last night.

I called the police, and they're filing a report. I've got comprehensive insurance, but the details haven't been worked out yet since it's the weekend now. Unfortunately (I think...) there's no paint left on my car, but plenty of rubber bits from someone's bumper all throughout. It's pretty high, and the rubber itself spans roughly a 4 inch strip.. My guess is it's a jeep cherokee, but I really don't have any idea. I'm in an apartment complex with un-reserved spaces, so.. hopefully they live here and I can unleash my venomous wrath on them, if not I'm just out of luck :madfawk: .

Anyway, mostly posting because I like to look at this kind of thing, and if anyone has any suggestions on how to proceed that'd be great. I haven't gotten any estimates yet, and really don't have any idea what to expect.

Presumably, the driver was parked next to me and pulled out of their space fully turned (and fast), clumsily hitting my poor Celica and driving away like the irresponsible drunk bastard they probably were. The damage continues back past the wheel well...

Insurance is going to fuck you! Well, maybe not cause you're not me. But most likely that's totaled believe it or don't. I will fawking kill anyone who does a hit and run. If I see it happen to someone else I will kill them. I got hit and run by a drunk fuck at a bowling alley once. Mine was WAY worse than yours. I swear to this day that assbag better hope the cops get to him first. Fuck that pisses me off. Anyway, I feel for ya man. Good luck.

sux, but it gives you the excuse to start restoring the car!

If the Ins. company totals it, try to get them to let you keep the car, it's virtually worthless to them anyway. That could be fixed fairly easily with a new fender. Tell the body shop you take it to for the estimate that you don't want the car totalled so they should price the job accordingly.

dang....that bites out loud !!! :( sorry to see.....yeah, in agreement with a couple of replies, the car's likely gonna be considered "totalled" by ins co, unfortunately. They may let you "buy it back" with a salvage title, but, unless the car is nicely modded/customized/personalized/has sentimental value, you'd likely be best served by searching for another vehicle.

My last car met a similar fate (less than 5mph fender bender...was a '95 Olds 88) ....cosmetic damage, structurally car was still perfectly drivable....insurance co determined it would cost about $1000 more to fix than the pos was worth - can't say that I disagreed ;) ). In my case, it worked out well, as the guy up the street at the time was selling his wife's GT vert, which I purchased withthe insurance $$$

Good luck, sir...

Well, obviously no change yet, but I was really hoping you guys wouldn't think it looks totaled. The car has its quirks of course, but it's my first car and I've really cared for and loved it. I definitely don't want it totaled, it would be a total waste. It still drives fine, everything as far as I know is still in good shape.. aside from this, obviously. I have grown quite attached to the car, and really haven't seen any as nice as mine in person (though I know a lot exist, especially among most everyone here).. So I really want to do what I can to save it. A salvage title seems completely unnecessary, but I can see why that might have to happen. It's an automatic 91 GT-S with system 10, and is in really good shape. Blue book for private party is coming up just over $3k, so I'm hopeful.

How much can this damage possibly cost to repair? I realize it may require a new quarter panel, and those are probably rare to say the least. Ugh. Thanks for the input, everyone. Heads will roll when I find the person responsible. If :(

The car's completely stock, in good shape. I know insurance companies don't go off of blue book values, but calculate their own values which tend to be really low for older cars. From others I've seen for sale, 3k seems reasonable, but somehow I don't think they'll think so...

Just for anyone that's wondering...

Three quarter panels left on the west coast  . Looking really close to a total loss, can probably eek out getting them to fix it though, for my $300 deductible. Over $800 for the panel, so will try to see if I can find one at a yard, but not sure it'd be worth the freight to get it here...

I hate to say it, but I'm really close to not fixing it. I love my celica, but they're so expensive :( . But I'm still in love with it, so I'll probably do what I can to fix it the right way.

That sucks man, I hate idiot drivers like that.
I never park near a car that has its wheels turned, just to be on the safe side. Morons.
Good luck with the Celi, hope you can save it.

My RSX was broken into 2 weeks ago and they ripped the hell out of my seeks, cut through most of the harnesses that goto my amp, took my shift knobs, all my windshield wipers, and broke my passenger side window. Sigh..my luck lately...Sorry this doesn't have anything to do with your hit and run, but i felt like expressing my frustration.

moronic people these days....i'll admit when i was younger i use to theive for car parts from rims to sound systems. in my own defense i never left a mess for the owner to clean up :wiggle: but when i started putting parts on my car i started to think about how it would feel if someone would jack my stuff....neways just yesterday i saw this guy backing up and rammed his front passenger side against my neighbors car. he saw me looking and burnt off. I thought i would have a little fun before school and chase him down. I was barely racing after him when he turn and hit the curb nasty and had a flat tire. i had a good laugh.. neways here's a pic of what happen to me one time when i parked at the mall

Mall parking lots are the worst! But there's just no avoiding stupid people, they're everywhere. Looking a lot like I'm going to be getting the check from my insurance and figuring something else out for the fender. Insurance is still processing a total loss evaluation with a new fender.. So if I want to keep it and have their recommended body shop fix it it'll just be some serious repair. Though the clearcoat is in good shape, the paint has lots of chips etc in it anyway, so I may end up getting a junked quarter panel somehow and then dealing with it somehow on my own. Between the proper repair and money in my pocket, it's a tough choice. Especially when the amount is getting close to the cost of the whole car. We'll see...

There was another accident outside my apartment tonight, a week exactly after my car got hit :ugh: ... I don't know what it is about Thursday night around here..

Edit: Your maroon 5-speed looks nice, I'm in Washington or I'd take a look :D
