Ok got a 92 GTS the stock engine sucks to begin with and mine is in bad shape forget even trying to run it to redline it dies after about 5K. Don't need anything crazy mid 15's would be fine for a daily driver. I'm thinking the 3rd gen 3SGE which is rated for what somewhere around 170HP I've seen. The 2nd Gen is good for 150 or so I've read but I don't see anywhere that it shows or lists the visual differences between the two. I occasionally see 3SGE on ebay but it doesn't say the year or gen. Obviously it's easy to tell it from the first gen TVIS engine and obviously the 4th gen is noticable. Anybody know more about the 2nd and 3rd that might help me.

1G 3S: small valves, low lift short duration cams, large port design, cc's, flow rate

- rectangular intake ports, W 61mm x H 39mm
- oval exhaust port, W 38mm x H 33mm
- int. valve 33mm dia.
- exh. valve 28mm dia.
- lifter dia. int/ext. 28mm

2G 3S: larger valves vs. 1G, higher lift and longer duration cams vs. 1G, small port design, cc's and flow rate.

3G 3S: larger valves vs. 2G, higher lift and duration vs. 2G, larger port design vs. 1G, cc and flow rate, shimless buckets, VVT

I can't back any of it up though.

EDIT: Whoops, saw your actual question was about the visual differences, so google became my friend and the only difference I found was that the part of the intake manifold that has toyota written on it is grooved on the gen2 and smooth on the gen3. Otherwise they look damn similar.

Intake manifold is the obvious difference. 2nd gen 3S-GE has Toyota written on it while the 3rd gen 3S-GE has the Toyota emblem instead.

2nd gen = ribbed cam belt cover
3rd gen = smooth cam belt cover

2nd gen = rectangular intake plenum
3rd gen = cilindrical intake plenum

Ummm... I have a gen 3... no VVT. It's got ACIS to replace TVIS... and yes, larger ports, valves and longer cam duration (possibly lift too).
