Hello i recently transplanted a 3sgte into my 91 celica and the 5sfe tranny went out almost immediately. i was wondering if anyone knew how much it would be to rebuild and strengthen the gears on that...another question on top of that would be how much would it cost to have the gears 1-4 lowered, and is that possible. third question does anyone know a good transmission shop in western washington that could handle these requests? if so a phone number would be appreciated.

I would honestly just say screw rebuilding the S53, and getting an S54 instead. It seems to hold up better to mid power levels that the 3sgte will put out, and are just plain better. :)

yes.. rebuilding will cost well over 500 bux. A used s54.. probably 350 or so. There's really no use in rebuilding it.

i realize it may cost a little more but the gearing is what interests me and also with the s54 would i have to get different wheels or are they the same lug pattern? 500 dollars for an s54 where could i find that?

Same lug pattern. I'm pretty sure that the gearing is fairly similar between the S53 and S54. I'd ask Luni about it. :)

As for price, sorry i can't help you there, i never priced one, wasn't interested in them.

From everything I've read and been informed by various engine shops I've dealt with. They recommend the E153 (the MR2 tranny) with or w/o LSD is up to u. I had my swap in for 6 months running 230whp and never really had any issues w/my S53 (the 5SFE tranny) besides it being "squirrelly" as h*ll in 1st & 2nd. Then it went into the shop for a complete rebuild and lots of upgrades. So I'm thinking my S53 will go out too. I'm looking into the E153 w/lsd. Gonna be more money than rebuilding your S53 but well worth it. I've heard of people going through those S53's like crazy, but have yet to see proof either.

Want proof? Talk to Burnyd. :) I think he holds the record for blowing up S53s. On a basically stock swap, at that.

Da*m!! Yeah, but from the posts I've seen of his he really tears them up, power shifting and whatnot.

yea powershifting is not reccomended... but also, the white 6gc 3s swap at my shop has gone through I think 3 S53 trannys on a fairly stock setup. I would deff steer you away from S53s

Ghost, why is it using the S53? I though the 6th gens had the S54. Which I've been told is, obviously being newer, better than the S53. I've been told that its a better setup but I still think I'm gonna go with the E153 w/LSD.

I dunno the tranny codes like that... I just know that he used and broke the stock 5s tranny 3 times
