Those guys tested AMSOIL and MOBIL 1 synthetic oil and send samples to analyse at every X miles.

http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html

cliff notes :

Mobile 1 was good for 18 000 miles, and only needed a new filter at 12 000 miles.

Amsoil was good for 14 000 miles with no filter change needed.

So if you're using either of these oil, don't be scared if you forgot your oil change for a couple thousand miles :D

And dinosaur juice is definitly something I'll never use again...

I've been saying this for years.

Fully synth in a N/A engine is good for a very long time indeed.

I still change mine every 4.5K, but turbo heat is pretty harsh on oil.

Dino whaaaaat...? I stopped using dino oil ages ago.

On the other hand I feel like a complete moron for changing my synth oil every 7.000 miles (filter changed after 3.000 miles) after reading this :slap:

BTW, how come we dont have a :hammer: icon... sheesh.... :lolhittin

currently using mobil1 on my 60K 5sfe! (used it from day one and 21 miles when it got her)...its going smooth thus far! I change the oil+filter every 3K miles still...oil comes out the same color it goes in!

i use dino oil on the higher mileage cars only bc if use synthentic the synthetic is going to make ur engine burn more oil/leak more bc it gets to the spots that dyno oil cant get to.

Very impressive study.

That definitely is very interesting, but I really don't like the oil thickening up like that.

i was just wandering this the other day. my mom bought a 2004 Altima 2.5 and it has like 12k on it. would switching to synthetic be OK? she wanted me to make 100% sure.

I went from dino to synth at 74.000 miles on my first Celica and 112.000 Kms on the second one, the car (second one) has now 200.006 Kms and nothing wrong with it eventhough when I bought the car and had the engine washed inside what came out was a very pasty SLUDGE... I was in a doubt on weather to change to synth or keep using dino, but I took the leap and went with synth, luckly I've had no problems at all, compression is normal for a 200.000 Km engine and no puffs of smoke or anything like it.

regular oil has no advantage except cheaper price compared to synthetics. really !!!

It'll be fine. You're out of the break in period, but not so old that your seals will be worn. So it'll take the synth just fine. Just make sure she knows that she can't keep switching back and forth between the two. If she goes synth she has to stick with it, and it'll treat her well.
