View Full Version : Intercooler Installed

08-27-2006, 02:21 AM
Hey guys, just nearly wrapped up my installation of a Front Mount Intercooler into celi. Overall it went pretty well, I need to weld on the BOV still, and get the correct angle on the intercooler that I'm looking for.

I bought the piping from a guy in Australia, overall I love it, its going to polish up nicely :)

Havent really test drived the car too much yet, still figuring out boost leaks and what not, but it feels so smooth and linear, and the best part, no more heat soak. The piping is 2.5 inches, and the intercooler CORE is 600x300x76mm, all the couplers are 4ply, and all the clamps are stainless T bolt clamps. I also installed an ATS Billet throttle body inlet, and put on all new gaskets for the thottle body and inlet.

Lag is non existant, I dont know what people are smoking when they assoicate FMIC with lag, its BETTER then factory.

Heres a few uncleaned up pics, more later when I'm not so busy!

Sorry, pictures are ginormous.

Oh yeah, and WTF is this! Theres only ONE entrance to this box, and it comes from the engine bay. I assumed it had something to do with the factory air intake system, but that makes no sense since the only entrance into this box is FROM the engine bay.

Lucky me it was stuffed with weed lol

Actually iti was about 3 lbs of moss, what a weird fucking box.

wow thats hot hahaha is it me or does it look crooked slightly on the left?

08-27-2006, 03:01 AM
looks great sean, but you might want to resize the pics, they are a little on the large side.

08-27-2006, 03:59 AM
LOL that box is AWESOME!!!

But the front mount looks awesome. :) Glad the install went pretty well. If it holds up like that, i may go ahead and get that same kit, thanks for being the ginea pig. :P

I must say.

It does look sexy, that was already expected though. lol

Cant wait till I throw on my CS bumper. Within next month. So how much did you end up dropping on the FMIC kit?

Ebay kit or was it all custom?

08-27-2006, 06:00 AM
I told you the pics were large, wiill not resize them on this cpu.

I also said the intercooler needs to be adjusted as well.

:bigthumbu Lookin' good Sean.

08-27-2006, 08:03 AM
Looks great man! Thank you for filling up that front bumper.

08-27-2006, 01:30 PM
that is sexy

if you blocked off the fog light holes, and the big space around the intercooler your intercooler effeciency will go up... the way it is right now, nothing is forcing the air to go into the intercooler/radiator... you may end up with an overheating issue too...

08-27-2006, 05:12 PM
Looks great Sean!! I'm sure you'll enjoy and appreciate the extra comfort of knowing your not using a super heated top mount! Good added protection. I enjoy having a front mount any day over my top mount. Also, I have to agree... I have never had any issues with lag. I had even done my own runs on a single day starting with the front mount, switching to the top mount and then back to the front mount to compare on full runs from 30mph-120mph. I didn't feel any difference. Looks great though! Enjoy!

That intercooler is the same Ebay special you can get for like 120 bucks. I just tuned a LS/Vtec with a 60-1 and one of those coolers, and it did an awesome job. I'm rocking one on my drag car.

08-27-2006, 06:53 PM
Sorry guys, my internet still blows...

I've ran into a few issues.. will post pics and what not later.

08-27-2006, 07:21 PM
CS bumpers come with front license plate mounts? I always thought they didn't.

08-27-2006, 08:15 PM
Looks good just a little too big.

08-27-2006, 08:24 PM
Your car is simply...Amazing. BTW Whats the intercooler/piping you got called?(brand)

08-27-2006, 10:37 PM
So. You gonna change your sig now? "FMIC going in..." to maybe "FMIC Installed"???

08-28-2006, 03:11 AM
Lag is non existant, I dont know what people are smoking when they assoicate FMIC with lag, its BETTER then factory.

Compared to a stock ATA ic, definitly. Though when it is super cooled [IE 20* or such] it works VERY well. Even when stopped. :D

Compared to a stock WTA, dunno. My 205 one is incredible....

That box is a resonator.
Just like on the 5S [Remember that small box on the side of the intake tubing?].

08-28-2006, 05:53 AM
I remember that box on the 5s that A/Tman is talking about. I took it off and replaced it with a PVC plug.

08-28-2006, 08:50 PM
what issues?

08-29-2006, 01:15 AM
what issues?

God damn what a weekend.

I got it installed, and then spent the entire day Sunday sorting out a wiring mess under my passenger side carpet. I rewired my Blitz BC and moved the remote unit inside out of the weather and heat. I also finished my AC removal by gutting the box behind the glove box of its contents, glad I did this!

After this 8hr endeavor, I attempted to diagnose my leaks. I pressure tested for a good 3hrs with soapy water, until I finally found a couple little leaks. Unfortunetaly, one of the leaks was the BC I just moved earlier in the day, which was now tucked away behind the glove box, damn. Ripped all the AC out, yadda yadda... I was also looking on the T-VSV line off the Actuator, which in an attempt to fix i snapped the CSI timer switch on the water neck off the block.

Other pertinent problems that revolve around this kit... for me, the 90 off the turbo was to high, and one of the studs off the hood scoop attempted to puncture that 90 silicone coupler. I ended up having to remove that stud from the hood scoop. I'm also getting pretty serious compressor surge with the BC turned off. I believe this is mostly related to the fact that I dont have my BOV installed yet.

I think i just found my last boost leak, synched down the T bolt clamps one more time, and she's now running great!

Pete is sending me a new 90 coupler as well for off the turbo. I still also need a different style filter.

Yes, the intercooler is a greddy knock off from ebay. It was also severely damaged cosmetically in shipping, which pissed me off. I did not send it back though, as the damage is on the back side of the cooler, no damage to the actual path of the airflow.

Overall, with the T bolt clamps, billet throttle body inlet, couplers, piping, intercooler, BOV flange, it ran around 600 bucks. This is about 4-500 cheaper then the BayArea kit for 2.5 piping and a few add on's.

08-29-2006, 02:07 AM
looks awesome. well done sean :)

08-29-2006, 03:48 AM
looks good sean! i believe bong has the bayarea kit on his 3s powered droptop.

08-29-2006, 07:47 PM
Unfinished piping picture. Still needs to be polished, tap for WI, and BOV mounted.

 :wavec:

Thanks guys. At the moment, I'm trying to decide on a color scheme for the engine bay. I've been workng on my spare 3s, getting it ready to drop in. I should have a USDM wiring harness here soon enough, which I will then slice open and tuck all of my aftermarket wires within. I dont know, going for cleanliness, we'll see what happens next summer!

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but Sean how did you hang your intercooler? Do you just use normal bolts or is there something specific out there to buy?

Also did you support the cooler from below to stop it swinging? If so what did you do?

Thanks dude.

Nice fmic setup Sean, very clean ride aswell. I think you gave us all great ideas on where to hide our drugs :)
