I recently bought a 1987 Celica GT-S with the 3SGE engine.
It has about 176,000 miles on it. I was told by the seller that
the engine had been overhauled at 125,000 miles by a Toyota
mechanic (but not in a Toyota facility). At any rate, I think
that the maintenance schedule calls for changing the timing
belts on the engine every 60,000 miles.

So, I was wondering, does anybody know if this engine
is an interference or non-interference engine. That is...
will the pistons contact the valves and cause damage
if the timing belts break. Or...are the tops of the pistons
dished out to accomodate the valves?

It's non-inteference

Which means it wouldn't damage any valves in the event of the timing belt breaking.
