or is it 22RE-T?

ANyways I'm lookin at a late 80's 4x4 that supposedly has this engine in it. ANybody heard anything about it? does it come standard in this truck or is it transplanted from something else? is it a problem motor or bulletproof?

22re = bulletproof.

it's a turbo 22RE... it's standard in some year of the unspecified toyota pickup.

we put an lcenginnering (http://www.lcengineering.com/) engine into a 83 celica hatch...runs 13's all day

My parents recently acquired a (I believe 88) 4runner 22-re and my pops describes driving it as "Like driving a conostoga wagon pulled by a pack of fucking yaks on angel dust"

sounds like a pretty good choice then eh? goes like snot?

I might just have to pick this truck up and drop it in my dads little pickup when the body rusts apart

Came in 87 and 88 pu and 4Runners.
Technically it's the 22R TEC.
The engine itself is bullet proof, just like the 22R/RE.
The turbo isn't quite as much so. Due to a less than perfect design they tend to last only 100k or so.
And the engine stock doesn't make that much power.
Keep an eye on the timing chain guides and make sure the coolant is flushed regularly.

Not to knock them though, they are good engines, and have plenty of potential. But there are roadblocks to power. Pretty much the same stuff as the 3SGTE.

Pick it up if the price is right.
They are rare and nice to have.
I wouldn't mind one in my truck. :D

Moving to General.

You're looking at roughly 145hp, and low boost, around 5 or 6 psi IIRC. I could be wrong but I don't believe they came with forged pistons either. The stock turbo is kinda crappy as well. In stock form it's not much better than a 22RE. However, toss in some forged pistons, a new turbo, and engine management and you can boost them to some real power. I believe the toysport website claims with upgraded fuel, turbo, and pistons the engine can take 25psi. Before losing my mind and going with a 3SGTE, I was planning to run either a 22RTE or 22RE with forged internals and a turbo. The 22RTE is a little better for this as it has oil squirters for the underside of the pistons and perhaps a couple other minor things. Jamasco has a "work truck" with a turbo 22RE that is pushing 350hp to the wheels.

I'm not lookin to beef it up or anything...I just never heard of this motor and don;t want a dud...but it sounds like its got potential to be a powerhouse if done up right...I'm sure it would be a nice block to work with

i hate u ive been looking for one of those for a swap for the gts

22r-tec was made from 86-88, then was replaced by the 2vzfe,

still bulletproof, turbo sucks 6psi stock

run forever though u see how many miles mine has on it

btw keep a spare ignitor , and coil assmembly

ignitor and coil asembly eh? got it

knowing turbo... you can go around it.. add a BOV... boost... do minor stuff that you will do to a 3sgte...

i get one later 2.
