that's weird.

I get about 12.5km/litre in the country travelling at an average speed of 125km/hr

I get about 10km/litre in the city.

all 5th gen celicas should be 15.9 gallons but I will double check.

my gts held 11 gallons and i got around 300 to a tank on it. but my st and its lil 1.8 liter holds 12 gallons. i can jam 13 in there sometimes. i ran the ac only when i was on my phone so maybe had it on for a half hour out of the whole time and my light came on at 410. drove it a little longer to see how much i could get out of it. i own you all!

if you were to drive it dry it would have taken 15.9 to fill it though..
I am sitting at 312 miles on this tank and the guage is showing 1/4 of a tank to go.. we will see who ownes who..

ps 50% of this tank has been with the AC on..
mornings no AC and return in the afternoons is with AC :bigthumbu

I get over 400 miles on every tank, and it costs usually around $36 to fill up, $40 if i really run on fumes for a few miles.

So, yeah, close would be the word here. :P

Did you verify that all 5th gens are 15.9? I'm really curious... because i've never been able to put much more than 12.5 gallons in mine, and i'm wondering if i should try to shoot for 500 on a tank. :)

Nope, we've (we being the site) been over this before: there are some celicas that have the 12.8(.9?) gallon tanks. Mostly the ST models. I do believe sean said his 90 GTS has the 12.X gallon tank. I know my 93 has it. I ran out of gas and put right at 13 in it. Now that i think about it, it might be a 13.9 gallon tank, but i remember there being a discussion a while ago...and I know I have the smaller one.

I havenen't been able to find anything else written from toyota besides the 15.9
I will keep researching though :D

Just looked in my manual. the 4wd versions came with 18gal tanks and all others 15.9 :) Usualy toyota sets the warning light kinda high because they recommend that you do not drive on the tank with less than 1/4 inside. (I guess so that you don't pic up trash that is on the bottom of the tank) :dunno:

Glad I ran across this thread, as my '92 GT had me wonderin' about tank volume reality vs. published volume vs. gas gauge "accuracy." I typically fill up my cars at around the 1/4 tank mark, more out of habit than anything. Typically, I fit about 9 gallons in, more or less, which would have me extrapolate figures that I'd fit around 12 on "E", which leaves like 3 gallons in reserve ???!!!??? Had me wondering, as I originally thought it had a similar size tank to my first Celica (13.4-ish gallons), was kind of shocked to read in the manual that it has a 15 gallon tank, for crying out loud. That is a LARGE reserve once you hit E (I'd prefer a 100% accurate gauge that only shows F when it's 100% full and only shows E when it's completely empty......oh, yeah, and a nice linear gauge - much unlike the pos Oldsmobile that gavev up it's life so I could get my Celica.....the Olds fuel gauge would be extremely slow moving from full to 1/4 tank, making you think you're getting pretty good gas mileage.....but would drop like a rock from 1/4 to E...like 50 miles worth of fuel....hated that car, with a passion.

I'll be pissed if that's true, my 165 holds about 12gal at the max. Very irritating to get around 310 per tank.

as much as you wanna say its a 15 gallon tank everyone else says otherwise. i have never been able to fit anything over 13 gallons in my gts. and id run it on fumes sometimes just to test how far i could go on e.

Toyota's Idea is to make us think we are on fumes so that we keep the eingine healthy. has anyone ever run their car empty (to the point of it dieing)?

i get insane mileage out of my civic CX. 32 bucks to fill it and i got 560kms before i started to get nervous. it still ran fine though.. i should have brought a can and rode it dry just to find out.

but yea, when the thing is on E, you usually still have like 2 gallons left. i used to get another 100kms out of my 2000 GT when the gas light was on.

I just got my turbo back in the car last Wed.
When I got it on the road for a shakedown, I used a friggin QUARTER tank in TWENTY MILES.
But I had a buttload of crap flowing through, from 2 bad turbos and WAY too much fuel....

Getting better.
I've been cruising around, on the hiway and such trying to clean some of it out.

Maybe its the coupes that have the bigger tank and the hatchbacks with the 13.2 tank? When my steady gas light is on, i usually fill up about 11.5 or max up to 12.5 if i ran it on the light for awhile.

I have the same issue with the non-linear fuel gauge. It's crazy! I drive 200km before I'm even at 3/4 of a tank.

You guys really shouldnt be measuring miles per tank, you should be measuring miles per gallon.

Miles per tank isnt necessarily relative because one person may fill theirs up more than the next guy.

Miles per gallon is a static, cant change it, end all, number to tell your fuel economy.

So all of you guys measuring it in miles per tank, should do a miles per gallon test and come back and post your results.

Ill start.

If Im driving, normally city/highway mix (I work downtown and its a mixture of city/freeway to get there) I get around 25-27

However if Im on a highway (not the freeway) with like a 50mph speed limit and Im doing 65 and my windows are up and the t-tops are on Ill get 33 or 34. In the summer with the headlights on and t-tops off Ill get down as low as 19 or 20. But Ive averaged it over several tanks recently and it was 25.

Ok I am at 383 miles (612 km) on this tank and the light just started to come on. I will post up my MPG a little later when I fill up today but I estimate that I should be close to 32-33 mpg (this is 50% driving with AC on and average speed of around 70-75 mph)

I've ran my GT dry by accident once, and i put 1 gallon of gas in from a can to get to a station and only added like another 13 gallons to it ... i definatley don't think the tank filled us to 15.9 like the manual says.

I get about 12.5km/litre in the country travelling at an average speed of 125km/hr

I get about 10km/litre in the city.

I own you both. Punks.

My city efficiency is probably better. Drove 410km then filled up. Took 39 litres

that's 10.5km/litre.

That's with a dodgy head gasket too. :hehe:

your car must need a tuneup or something, cause id drive my stx balls to the wall and with a leaking hg, old ignition componets, and bad o2 sensor i was getting 450-470 out of a tank of gas

tiburon lately has been getting 400 from a 14.5 gal tank, thats with the a/c on 80% of the time

gts only gets 330-350 but it could stand a rebuild

That's only 12 km/litre. Are you driving on the highway or city?

"Balls to the wall" is relative in an STX, I see practically no difference in economy when I flog the car vs when I just cruise.

you're getting better efficiency on the highway. something wrong with my math skills (perhaps a complete absence there of?).

LOL, Yes toped it. My advantage is 2 minutes to the autobahn in the morning 70-75 mph driving and 5-10 minutes at the work end of secondary roads. and after work reverse order, so most of it is highway. ;) I will be trying various speeds to see what is the best in the next couple of weeks. :wiggle:

fair enough, but there ain't nothing wrong with 10.5km/litre in the city.
