Ah.
You have found the control cable for the heater core.
You need to go to the engine bay, find the coolant hoses that go into the firewall. There is a valve there. This cable is attached to it.
Remove the cable from the valve. Then pull out.

I believe it's a bitch to reinstall, fyi.
I've never messed with one.
All my Celicas have had auto ac.

Auto climate control equipped cars make it easier to remove dash?

Yes because they are electronic, rather than a cable controlling the temp.

when I removed my dash, I had to reach up there and the cable that is connected clips onto the nob. You can't really see it up there.....quite a bitch but once you lift it up and unclip it, as long as you already unscrewed everything else then you should be free to take it out. As mentioned above have fun putting it back on, and WATCH out, I must of turned the nob and when I reconnected it the temp is all out, so now in the summer even when the nob is on cold it is physically probably in the middle....bastard cable.
My best advice is hire a little japanese guy to get in there, he'll probably be able to do so a lot easier, lol.
Good luck!

I pulled the knob off and left the cable as is. The HVAC unit will pull away from it.

the HVAC unit is screwed onto the face plate

ok relax...

there are two cables coming out of the Climate Control Unit.

One goes directly through the firewall to the back of the engine bay. Have someone wiggle the unit and look back there and you will see the wire move. Just simply unattach the cable from where it is connected (with your hands or with plyers).

The second cable is under the driver side steering column (by the foot pedals) towards the center console area. Again, have someone wiggle the unit and look for the wire wiggle. Remove this wire from where it is clipped on.

I wish I had pictures to show you. My parts car is not at my house, but at my old house, and I havent had time to run over there to take a picture of it.

Haha, no disconnect the wires from where I told you to. Then you should be able to pull out the climate control unit.

hey man I took some pix.....heres the rascal...so I SHOULD be able to disco the blue wire from the end that I took the picture of right? Or do you want me to disco the end in the engine bay and pull forward? I found the black cable and that is now totally free, just this last blue one has me stumped.

There are no special tricks or anything like that. The end of that blue wire should slide out. THere might be a clip holding it on, I cant remember, but just look around at the end of the wire.
