View Full Version : Semi rough idle

I noticed yesterday that when I start up my engine before it's completely cool down (about 10 to 20 minutes of setting) that the idle, which my dad and I first adjusted for about 1200 (which has now slipped back down to 950 or 1000) will start out at about 750 and might do a small 100 rpm jump up to 850 or so. After about 45 seconds of this, it'll ease up to 950 rpm and stay, maybe going to 975 or 1000 but nothing else. On a cold start it'll hang steady at 1000.

I'm quite sure it's nothing serious, but I wanted to see if anyone else has noticed this in their Celica. The car is at 95,000 miles, 5sfe engine.

Well, I went to wash the car and started it up after vaccuming it, this time the idle starter at 500 to 600, bounced in between there, then went up to 700 to 800, and then back up to the upper 900's and smoothed itself out.

Isn't it supposed to start at 1200-1500 when the engine is cold?

Well, this is in summer weather, but cold start I'm meaning a start after the engine has had a chance to completely cool down.

Any ideas? I'm going to go pick up a distributor cap and PCV valve today, and use up gas, in case my last fill was low quality.

setting the engine to idle at 1200rpm is overkill. adjusting the idle to high can sometimes result in a fluctuation like that. let the engine warm up, disconnect the wiring harness on the fans,(idle speed is increased when fans come on) and turn the idle speed adjusting screw in 1/4 turns until your engine is idling at 750-800rpm(automatic) or 800-850rpm(5spd). it is normal for an engine to idle a couple hundred rpm above spec during the first few seconds of engine start up, but should idle down afterward.
