hey, i want to do a 3sgte swap in my 1991 celica gt....i think it will all bolt up mostly but i dont know what to do with the tranny. The swap comes with the all-trac swap, but obviously i do not have awd. what tranny should i get/use for the swap??

You can use the one that's already in your car, or you can convert the awd tranny to fwd, or you can buy an MR2 tranny and modify it to work with the celica layout.

Lots of options. :p

i wouldnt recomend trying to convert the awd tranny. use the gt tranny that you already have on your car.

You can put the 3s motor on the gt tranny. Some would recommend it some wont. The problem is your using a transmission thats not able to hold the power of a 3s motor + mods. The Mr2/solara/camry v6 trans is the best idea there all the same transmission The trans code is E153.

thnx alot...i think i might just keep the stock tranny for now, we"ll see about that...just check but does anyone know where a good place is to buy the 3sgte?, ive found a few sites but i still want to check with someone who has actually bought one

If I were to do it over again, I think I would source a S-54 and put an aftermarket LSD in it. The long gear ratios of the E-153 mr2 tranny are rather boring.

Are you serious????

I've heard it from quite a few people. I think he is serious.

S54 tranny seems to be the best, as it's got better synchro's and the nice gear ratios for getting to speed. I don't know the difference in the 5th gear between the s53/s54 though. s53's 5th is too short.

It doesnt have better synchros... gearing is good though as it is smaller... e153 has taller gears.. but whats going to last... E153. S54/53 isnt made to handle the power of a 3s motor.

S-54 has revised syncro's, so they're better then the S-53.

My S-53 tranny was a champ, it went through a hella of lot more abuse then my current mr2 tranny. And my current is in need of a rebuild..

As far as the gear ratio's, i guess i just need more powa :p

you get real mixed results. Some like the e153 some like the s54.... out of using both trans... I feel the e153 is for me. It just feels so much better and shifting in that at higher rpms it doesnt crap it self like my s54 did. But as far as the gearing the s54 felt a little better.

and which offers the LSD again s54? or is that something else,
from my reading up basically the LSD will allow you to put power to the ground better and more consistantly....correct?

ive had my stock s54 for 2 yrs now. the car made 229hp and 240 tq at the wheels and the tranny is still doing great. a lot of people seem to have great luck with the s54s. we also found (6gc thread) out that they were used, by toyota, in 6th gens with a 170ish hp 3sge motors in japan. so thats why these seem to hold up well.

the mr2 trans is probably the best one if you plan on some major turbo upgrades in the future, but sometimes it can be more of a hassle then its worth trying to mix and match all the right parts to get it installed correctly. same thing with the solara tranny. also the taller gearing will make for a slower car.

i think as long as you keep your car in the 200-300 whp range, the s53-54 would be the best bang for the buck, easy install, and fastest acceleration. the only draw back is that it dosnt have lsd, but thats not that big of an issue.... not to me at least.

i have to agree with art on this.
the s54 tranny will be just fine on a swap.
im putting 235whp and 274ftlbs thru one daily, with no issues.
just past the year mark yesterday!

dood i also have a 91 celica gt and am about to order a clip from jarco. You need to do ALOT more reading before attempting this, Ive been learning and reading up on it for almost 2 years now. Also just finished totally rebuiling a 3s for a friend of mine so Im very confident in my swapping ability. DONT rush it. And I may have some turbo 5s stuff for sale soon hahahaha. Ive been waiting forever for this. :) later Let me know if you have any questions.
