Just completed my yearly polish of my rims and they really needed it.
I have been using autosol metal polish since I got the car and I am really happy with the results.

Materials:

autosol metal polish
$5-$10 at any auto parts store...one bottle should last quite a few polishes

800 grit sandpaper

mildly abrasive scrubber
you are just trying to get the dirt off not gouge the metal out

household cleaner
I prefer spray kleen, but most any cleaner should work....or a specific wheel cleaner if you like

Starting off then
Here is my rim after driving all summer and sitting all winter

AFter a quick wash with the cleaner:

Now off to the 800 grit sandpaper, just to get whatever is left on it and prepare the surface a little better for polishing.....This step is optional I guess if you don't want to sand your rims but I found I get a better finish if I do it

Now the polish
I applied with a damp rag...then buffed off with a dry one
Try to concentrate on one area at a time as it works better if it is still wet when you buff it off and you can concentrate more on one area.
I did one spoke at a time...wax on...wax off....the more elbow grease you put into it the better it will come out. Then just repeat for each rim...you can do this on the car but it hurts the neck and knees after a while and I prefer just doing it once at the beginning of the season and then just washing them whenever I wash my car. When you have finished one wheel you can still go back and polish it again and again but I noticed after the third time in one spot it wasn't gettin any better so you're wasting your time doing more than that.
