Anyone have a good source for helicoil? I need to redo 2 studs on my 22re and need a Helicoil 10x1.25 kit. Anyone? I have found them online for $30-45 shipped.
Thanks all!
David

Wir haben Brats und Bier, Helicoil Was is das?

here stuff like that does not exist. (remember till the 90's basicly the only one that cold legaly wrench on a car was a mechanic...) it will take time till it starts to arrive. I have a bid up on ebay for a nice kit though. :bigthumbu

Think I need a sticker "tuned by Ebay" It is the only way I have kept the 4runner going!

You numbnuts.
Don't use a helicoil.
Use an insert. MUCH stronger.
Helicoil is a spring on steroids.
Inserts is a heavy metal sleeve with threads on both sides.
Once I'm back online at home I'll post you some pics.....

Nice blurry pic... What is that 2 helicoils and 2 inserts? How do you install them?

Is the engine out of the car? Is it for the block or the head. If the studs are on the head & the head is seperated from the block , why don't you just take it to a machine shop? I dont know what thay charge in Germany, but here in the states , most any machine shop would do it for about $10. Seems it would be the better alternative than paying $30-45 for something you may only use just once.

just my 0.02 cents

Yeah, sorry. It was too close to focus right.
Yes, 2 of each. The inserts are for a smaller thread, so they're even bigger....
With either one, you drill a new hole for the larger tap[for the outside threads to thread into], then tap the hole, then insert. With the helicoil you need to make sure the "rod" across the bottom of it is deep enough for the bolt/stud to sit completely in. With the insert, you drive the 4 metal pieces sticking up down into the outer threads, locking the insert in.

Does that make sense?

Makes total sense, what company makes them? Where can you get them?

Pretty much any machine shop should be able to get them.
What size[s] are you looking for?

Helicoil make for one of the most boring reads ever. Unsubscribing from this thread, because it gets more boring every time I get an update; and that is hard to do.

Ahh, now your talking.
Are they for the exhaust studs?
I'll warn you, inserts are more expensive than helicoils...
Especially large ones.
However, I might be able to get them through my buds dads machine shop at his cost.
I won't know 'til Mon.
And, you will need a tap for the outside thread on the insert. Plus of course a bit to redrill the hole...

I can get the tap through him too if you want, but it will be expensive too [still cheaper than what you can get, at least for a good quality one....]
It'll probably be a 12.

Actually, make that a 14....

Alright, it's gonna be $38 for 2 inserts and the tap.
The tap is a 14x1.5, and it's only going to run $31. :D
Plus shipping of course.
I ordered them today, so they should be in tomorrow or Thurs.
What is the address so I can find out shipping?
