Im changing my engine in my car to the 3SGTE. Im looking at putting the E153 V6 camry gearbox in my 88 Celica. Has anyone done this conversion or know of anyone thats done this conversion. Just wondering what drive shafts would have to be used.

The E153 comes in two flavors:

- The Camry version (non LSD)
- The MR2 Turbo and ST202 BEAMS Celica version (some of which have LSD fitted)

From what I have read, the Camry versions have a different output shaft spline on them (compared to the S53/S54 that came standard in Celicas), so you will probably need to get custom driveshafts made up to suit. The MR2/ST202 version of the box has the same output shaft spline so the standard ST162 shafts will slide right into them.

I stand to be corrected on this though, maybe check with a gearbox shop or a Toyota dealer to be sure.

Hope that helps,
Matt

You will use Camry inner stubs, and alltrac outer axles.

You can also source the E-153 from a the mr2 turbo. Other things, make sure to find an alltrac North and South Crossmember, it will make this a direct bolt on affair.

Im putting this in my 88 Celica. So are the lengths of the axles still the same size as the standard axles Sean. Ive tried seaching for an MR2 box but have had no luck. Ive contemplated using the Gt4 box but after viewing a thread on what to do. Ive changed my mind. I think the E153 box would best suit.

Sorry, im not entirely sure. I would think it would work just the same. My buddy had some 165 and 185 axles, and I believe they are the same length, same spline count, just a different size nut on the end. SHould be interchangeable.

Good luck!

Question for MTP_69-I,
Ive been told by a couple of people that this box would bolt straight up to my 3SGTE engine. Do you think there is a better choice?. At this point of time im open to suggestions. Im having trouble finding a E153 box.

I don't know very much about the different toyota gearboxes but I have heard that the S54 gearbox (96 Celica - is that 5th or 6th gen?), doesn't have the associated 2nd gear grindage issues of the S53 box (what we 4th gen'ers have) and should (but don't take my word as gospel) mate right up with the 3SGE. If/when I go 3SGE from 3SFE, I'll be looking for one of these boxes. Unless I get flamed to hell now and hear something different :D

furthermore, I think you can use all the same clutch gear (master and slave cylinder, line shifter cables, everything, but again don't quote me. There are a couple threads still pretty fresh going around. If I can find the link I'll post it for ya.

Not sure about the S54. Im putting a 3sgte engine in my car. Can it handle the power. It would be a lot easier to find than the E153 i bet.

Gen 6 boxes do have the synchro wear like earlier fwd celicas.

Dude - go for the MisterToo gearbox - its a straight fit.

I just worked it out, Are you talking about an MR2 box. Im a little slow today. Ive looked everywhere but cant find one. They seem to be very rare here in Australia.
