View Full Version : Gear+RPM to Speed charts?

Ok so I've finally (I think) calibrated my speedometer so that it's accurate. (Now I just need to calibrate it so it's slow, get the shop to set it right again and give me the paperwork for court :D ) However, I'm not completely convinced it's correct. And rather than drive down the road and honk at other drivers and ask them how fast they're going, I thought it might be good to have a chart for RPM(plus gear number) to Speed equivalents. I'd make one up myself except I'm not entirely sure mine's accurate to begin with so it might just be totally off.

In other words something like this:

Gear RPM Speed

And those are just made up values, so I doubt that they're correct. Now obviously, this only really applies to manual transmissions, and we'd have to account for three different types of engines (or four if you include the 3SGE) per generation, but it'd be a good chart to have for those of us that screw up our speedometers from time to time. Or maybe it'd just be good for me. Roight then! Anyone?

My car hits exactly 80 in 3rd gear at the rev limitter(6200rpms)
Had to try it one time. Thats the only one i know off hand.

Hmmm... I know mine are written on the Owners Manual somewhere, I'll check tomorrow, I'm too lazy to go down and check

is this on the Chilton manual?
if it is i could go check

I can make up a file that will calculate speed @ rpm. I need to know each gear ratio, final drive, engine redline, and tire diameter.

Hmm. Ok now I just need the gear ratios for the 5sFE. Is that in the owner's manual? FSM?

1st: 3.285
2nd: 2.041
3rd: 1.322
4th: 1.028
5th: 0.820
Reverse: 3.153

Diff. Gear Ratio (Final) 3.944

Oh man, my hero from the Great White! Once again, Steve saves the day with style and panache!

Seriously, thanks. This will at least give me an idea of how far off I am.

Edit: Hmm. These are the same values as those for the 3SGE. Hopefully they're not too far off.

S52 (2nd gen 3S-GE, Euro, JDM, General)

S52 Transmission Specs
1st - 3.285
2nd - 2.041
3rd - 1.322
4th - 1.028
5th - 0.820
R - 3.153

Final Drive 4.176

:squint: Hmmm... there is something fishy here, both gear boxes have the exact same ratio? Dont think so, I had Celicas with both trannys and the S52 had taller gears... :wtf:

the final drive ratio in the S52 is higher, thats why the gears seem longer

Ok on the trip in to work, I verfied two things:

1.) in 5th gear, I get the following speeds per RPM levels:

45 mph @ 2250 rpm
50 mph @ 2500 rpm
55 mph @ 2750 rpm
60 mph @ 3000 rpm
65 mph @ 3250 rpm

2.) On the way, there was one of those digital speed signs that cops put up on the back of a pickup truck in a 25 mph zone, so I confirmed that my 25 and 30 mph readings were accurate (at least according to the digital readout on the sign).

Alright, here is a simple vehicle speed at RPM chart that I put together in Excel. Input the gear ratios, tire circumference, and desired RPM.

The current values in the chart are for an S53 equipped car with 205-50-16 tires.
