alright im tired of the 5th gen because frankly i love the car and all but its a nightmare to keep alive

basicly everything i havnt replaced twice already is either dead or going

and its fwd

so im trading it plus 700 for a black 85 gts 5speed

cons:

a/c dead.....im usally good at revivingng a/c systems
tires are shot...all choppy...can get a set from friend cheap
driver corner busted, nice hole....can get one easy
driver seat worn....already found one
dash cracked to hell....can possibly get another dash from dynamic73
radio bezel broken, gonna ask dynamic for that as well or the junker
aftermarket radio sux...its ok my motorized sony is going in
alighnment is off
slight rust spots on hatch
tint has got to go, its purple and all bubbly

other than that its clean

only other things that bug me is no sunroof and window cranks, but it will do, always wanted a 3rd gen, this seems to be a good deal

edit: im getting the 700 and an 85gts

So you're trading a 15-year-old car in for a 21-year-old car?
You might be replacing a lot of that stuff soon too....

DO IT. 3rd gens aren't hard to work on, they're RWD, handle like nobody's business, and are fun as hell to drive. I wouldn't think twice about it, if I were in your situation, but that's just me. Plus I think the 3rd generation ones look sleek as hell. And with the GT-S you've got the wide fender flares, power windows, locks, something like an 8-way adjustable seat (not power, but still, they make driving very comfy), and those fat four-spoke alloys. Assuming he kept all of that stuff on it, anyway. Yeah, I would do it if I were you.

i got both heheh, i love my 3rd gen hell of o lot o fun to drive. i love RWD. get this my water pump went the other day and that joker did not overheat with out water for a 20 min ride to my friends, god that 22re is a beast of a motor. it never stops hahaha, o and a NEW water pump was 19.99 and took about an hour to change. I LOVE it, o and i got mine for 400 bucks. later

well no power windows, dey be cranks, p/w was optional for the gts in 85 so was the sunroof which it dont have

yeah ill probally keep the stock alloys for the time being till i find something better

oh and this car will last forever and look good for about 800-1300

I'm a fan of these particular cars. But if you are switching to the older platform, why not just get a mk2 Supra?

Its the same car, with nicer options and a far more powerful motor. Usually Get LSD standard as well, which I'm not sure came on the 22re 85 celicas.

I wouldn't pay 700 unless its in pretty good shape. Also, they do NOT make very good milage, thats pretty crazy going from a more reliable, newer FWD as a daily to a fairly old car like that.

Good luck though either way

Mister2T

wont last long with you driving it, havent you ever thought about perhaps your pounding on a car that cannot handle it?

k lemme clear a few things up

im getting 700 plus the car, taking part of that and registering it and putting the tag from my camry on it, celica has had temp tags for the last 5 months

22re when rebuilt properly, has seen high 30s mpg wise

dynamic73 on his 22re's is getting around 25mpg, not horible

this will be a project not a daily, basicly my weekend car, like the stx, which has been my weekend car since last august. ive had the tiburon since last summer, early july.

the stx was just a bad celica to start with, it was a beatten 500 dollar car, now looks new but still having multiple problems, charging system is currently skrewy, 1 of many things still wrong with it

u say the car im gonna get pimpedceli isnt gonna take abuse, for 1 a 3rd gen is the most reliable gen, 2 this car has been owned by an old woman and her daughter, 3 i take care of my cars far more than most people, just the stx has always had problems, remember my camry, no major problems ever and owned since 45k, my aunt now drives it with over 300k and only major thing done was i resealed the engine, trans and suspension overhaul, all this at 250k with no major issues.

also a mk2 supra cost far more to repair and a nightmar,e to work on, ive done it.

22re and 3rd gen parts are cheap and easy to come by, i could make this a show car for 1500 if i wanted but it will be a slow project

so research read and know me better for u speak

btw got a digi cam for my b-day yesterday so will be taking pics soon

edit...i know the 84-85 gts has lad stock and 85 has better gearing accel wise or i could get a celica supra rear which is geared even higher

Nightmare to work on? Its the same car with a longer engine bay! Its gotta be one of the easiest cars I've ever worked on, a lot of engine bay space with that strut suspension.

Sounds like the new Celica is wicked! If you have a daily then a fine idea! Will be a lot more fun then the ole FWD. They still are kinda slow though, even a well running 5MGE Supra with 160hp is still only a bit faster then a 5SFE Celica.

BUT the old Celica looks awesome! This one sounds in really good shape! You can always put a 6M in it later )) Got any pics?

Funny thing is, the HP ratings on the 3rd gen celicas are pretty low (about 100 hp) but I'm thinking the ratings must have been measured differently back then because when I drove the 83, there were a couple of things I noticed.

1.) Don't shift until you're at at LEAST 3000 RPMs.

2.) 5th gear is pretty much useless under 65-70 mph.

3.) Keep your revs high and you will beat the majority of the other newer cars on the road.

4.) HANDLES. LIKE. A. DREAM.

5.) You're right about the gas mileage. Almost as good as a 5th gen civic if take care of.

6.) 5th gen celicas are a dime a dozen (no offense, but I have two as well) but a shiny 3rd gen is something to drool over.

And if you need any MORE convincing, one of our members has a fine example of what these beasts should look like:

http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/1/7/3/8/1232320_IMG.JPG

I think I just got thick in the pants looking at that one.

85gtsblackman

well the hp rating on the 85-95 22re is 116hp 140 torque

but

if u ever look at the exaust system there is a very long 1inch section towards the rear , that kills gas milage and performace not to mention the restrictive intake set up and the plentum needs to be modified slightly

aslo cams and other goodies for the 22re are a dime a dozen, compared to most other toyota engines where 1 cam would cost 500 + for a regrind, the 22r performace cams can be found for under 100

to do the suspension and brakes like i want will cost between 300-600 pends if i get adjustibles all the way around.

engine rebuild kits, good ones, are not expensive.

theres a few things i know about the 22re to see 200hp daily driven n/a

but id be nice to supercharge it :bigthumbu

edit: went to take pics but woman left work early, called her and she said i should have the car by friday, then ill basicly store it at work :hehe:

I'm still quite sceptical of milage on the 22re being over 30mpg. If you want power, do a 6MGE JDM swap, low milage, you can get harnass and ECU from a mk2 for nothing, 180hp 180tq. (or my personal fav, a 7MGE from a mk3, 24v goodness from a parts car, all bits install yourself for about 500$ I think 200hp)

They are not the ultra superb handling machine you might think. I've owned two mk2 supras and driven quite a few other stock cars and my 90 GTS with Falkens and nearly stock suspension will match them for lateral grip but beats them in turn in, and transitioning. Its a better overall handling car, FWD or not, hands down. (stock anyways)

Funny you guys says 5th Gens are very common, they are quite rare where I live and I get looks all the time from people, which is suprising!

OoOOoOOOh lets see some pics!

3rd gens are rarer than celica supras

Up north where i came from, and here in Indy, there's some 5th gens, but not a ton, and most of them are shit boxes. I've only seen two on the road looking better than mine since i moved a month ago.

Won't cost ya 500 if the person before you ran it for 200 miles w/o coolant :hehe: ( :( ). And yes, it's 200 hp/tq

91stxman- I'm sure you already know of the site, but I still recomend you check out www.classic-celica.com. The third gen is not a classic really, but that site knows tons about r series engines while this site focuses way more on s series. Good luck with the new car! :bigthumbu

HAa haa thats very true! The idea is to find an old Cressida or Mk3 with something broken, but a solid drivetrain. 7MGE is 200hp 180tq I'm pretty sure, with 190hp in the Cresside, they dyno on higher milage engines about 165rwhp.

Even N/A 7M's have their head gasket problems.

7mge 200hp @6000rpm

Putting a 7MGE in your old Celica would be awesome! They are just so smooth compared to the older 5M/6M engines and more powerful. (JDM 6m's are overratted)

I've heard at the least 22re is very reliable, with a decent amount of power. I'd still be pretty iffy about giving up a Milage-Machine 4afe car for an older one. Old cars always have weird and sneaky problems unless you luck out and get a really good one.

well as u guys fail to realize...this wont be my daily, probally be parked for a week or so till i get insurance and a tag on it, even then wont be daily

the tiburon is getting 370 per tank and when i stay with my gf im only 10 mins from work so a tank of gas in the tib last a while plus it has a lot more power than the stx, but i still need to do a fuel system flush on the tib then ill reach 400+ miles per tank

well im trying to load about 8 pics but i may give up soon and go to bed, im exausted.

Damn. I want a hatch. I don't like the 3rd Gen Coupes.
