View Full Version : Autocross tire recommendations needed

It's time for me to buy some tires for auto-cross and am looking for some recommendations (and why they are recommended). Last year, 3 out of 8 races at our local track were on a wet track, so I think a treaded tire may be best. Also, I'm still in the process of learning (only been racing for 1 1/2 years), so I don't need really expensive really good tires.

The car is an '88 GTS, lowered, will have coil-overs soon, good brake pads and brake lines, bigger rear sway bar.

What class are you in?

I run in FSP and was thinking of using my 14" GTS rims. I also have 16" GTS rims, but tires that size are more expensive. 14" size would be 195x60x14

I notice that the Falken Azenis RT-615 are 8/32" tread depth and they don't say anything about recommending the tires be shaved when used for autox. As much as I hate the idea of shaving brand new tires, should they be shaved first be using them?

Don't have to shave becasue they are not a true R-compound tire. But you should follow their reccommended heat cycling.

14" size would be 195x60x14

Why would you be running a skinnier tire? Stock is 205x60x14?

If you visit the vulcan wesite you may notice that a guy may use a 195/60/14 becasue that's the largest size available for the Azenis RT-615 tires in 14". And beleave you me, their 195 is comparable in width to a normal 205, and with the more traction available over a convertional tire you could probibly go down to a muchh smaller width before it lowers in performance to the same as a convertional street tire.

Kumho 710's, hands down the fastest R tire you can run in the dry, period.

For wet, Advan A032R.

Those are expensive tire options. Great tires, but if you're just learning I would burn off my first few sets of cheaper tires learning the proper line and technique. Race rubber lets you get away with too many mistakes.

As far as the Azenis width, the new RT615 Azenis are no longer wider than usual. So a 195/60R14 Azenis will be the same width as a regular 195 tire. The RT215s were beefy little tires though!

I also would recommend the Azenis. Even at 195/60R14 they'll be stickier than any other non-race tire that you can find in a 205/60R14 size. Another option would be the Hankook Ventus RS2. Great tire. Similar to the Azenis in grip with a slightly softer sidewall.

I always buy used sets of R's for the Starlet from local racing buddies...costs 1/4 of retail and the tires usually have over 75% tread. I've only ran the Kumho's and they're awesome dry tires...when it rains though...then I'm in trouble. :hehe:

No suggestions on Non-race tires? I'd like to stay in street tire class if at all possible.

The Azenis are street tires. So are the Hankook RS2's.

Oh, I found out I can run R rated tires... it's cool as long as it's DOT legal.

For street tires...I'd probably get Toyo T1-R's.
