Do you have a 4afe? the clutches changed from 90/91 to 92/93. The diameter and number of splines decreased.

Are you sure about that year? I thought all 5th gens had the same clutch except for veeeeeery early ones had a different setup (I suspect the same as the 4th gen's 3SGE).

Edit: sorry, I am talking about 5SFE cars.

For the clutch disc, what I can tell you is generally speaking:

1) For ST185's, (89/10 - 90/06) is a different part number than (90/06 - 93/09)
2) For AT180's, (89/09 - 90/06), (90/06 - 91/04), and (91/04 - 93/09) shows three different part numbers for each production interval.
3) For ST184's, (89/09 - 91/12) is a different part number than (91/12 - 93/09).

Saying that, I don't know what the exact difference is between the different part numbers other than something is different. Hope that helps somewhat.

From what I've gathered, it's basically a change in disc size, as well as spline diameter.

hehe, toyota released a TSB (toyota service bulletin) in 04/90 (my car is 03/90) and changed the parts used in transmissions.

when i went to get my transmission synchros rebuilt i found out that these early celicas had different gearing in the transmission that used to eat through synchros super fast.

To get these parts for the rebuild i was quoted $750CDN for the part package. I looked in their book and its listed as a 10.5 hour job for the whole job. this is for 5sfe's only as far as i know. so go to toyota and ask if there was any service bulletins for celicas.

so yeah.... i bought a 92 tranny with 135,000 kms on it.
