they came in both forms

As stxman said, there were both 3 and 4 cylinder models. The 89-93 models were all hatchbacks and only had a 3 cylinder (49 hp xfi and 55hp LSi). For the 94-99 models, there were both hatchbacks and sedans. The hatchbacks came standard with 3 cylinder engines (the 4cylinder was an option), and the sedans only came with 4 cylinders.
There was also a 3cylinder turbo model, but it was only in the Pontiac Firefly, which was only sold in Canada.
