View Full Version : cv joint removal from shaft

I'm having a hard time removing the outer cv joint from the shaft.
I've try hammering the inner race out of the shaft, but no luck.
I believe there could be a snap ring in the way that's preventing me to be able to knock the inner race out of the shaft.

Question, how do I disconnect the outer cv joint from the shaft?

I've had a look at the bgb, and it says to get the outer race cover off, remove snap ring, then hammer inner race out, but I can't seem to find out how to get that outer race cover off?

The car is celica 90, 5sfe, australian model

To do it that way you need a special tool without damage to the joint. If you are using a boot kit from toyota they come with both boots (inner and outer). Just take the axle completely out and take it apart from the inboard joiint side. You don't have to dissassemble the outer joint then. Just clean it really good, pack it with grease and slide the new boot on from the inner joint side. Then reassemble the inner joint.

Dr Auto, thanks for the reply, I've discovered that you cannot dismantle the outer joint. So I've just cleaned it and regreased it, and the repacked it by dismantling the inner joint.
