I am looking for a P51 gearbox to go on the back of my 18RG but I am finding that the W50 gearbox look exactly the same .Can you identfy the gearbox with the serial number or with any other cosmetic feature without taking the gearbox apart and examing the gears because the people at the auto wreckers wont let you do it. LOL..

as far as I've ever read and heard, no, you'd have to take it apart to tell.

Plus the P51 is supposedly so rare that it is most likely not a P51 unless you or someone got it out of Japan from out of a GTV.

What would you suggest I use, A W50 or W51 or any other suggestions?

Would a W55 supra gearbox fit on the back of a 18rg and if so what mods do you have to do to it?

A W55 would be better than a W50 IMO.

There's also the W58. The transmissions will bolt right up to an 18RG if you have the correct R series bellhousing.

I'm not sure of all the bellhousings that would since your in Aus and I only know some North American market BH info. However if you're on the classic celicas yahoo group, ask Stepho, he's got a site full of that info.
