View Full Version : Camry engine

My mom's friend wants to get rid of her Camry. She'll sell it to me for $200.

1991 Camry
No/bad tranny, Auto
Body in great condition -no rust (from cali)
New starter, new tires (expensive tires apparently).

I looked into it a little more:
It's the 2nd generation 1987-1991

Available engines:
3S-FE 2.0 L DOHC 16v 4-cyl. WHICH IT IS NOT

Weight: 2690 lb.

Tires: P185/70R-14

Question - Can this engine fit into celicas at all? What should I do with this car? It's gotta be worth it. $200 and say $300 for a tranny (already found a few on car-parts.com) and have a friend help me put it in.

Any Ideas?

oh and -
Horsepower (hp) @ RPM
115 @ 5400
153-156 @ unknown

It's actually 156hp @ 5600 rpm and 160ft-lbs torque @4400 rpm.

BTW Adrian swapped a 3.0 V6 into his 5th gen GT-S. You'd need custom motor moutns made.

Yeah, it swaps into a celica, but it is ALOT of work. Adrian swaped a 1MZFE.

115hp is a 3sfe

that camry motor is a 2vzfe, they are decent engines, but for the work to put that motor in the celica id just swap in a 3sge

but then again id be a bad ass project

but if it were me id swap the camry to a manual trans and use it as a daily driver/beater/trip car

As already mentioned, yes it will swap in, it will need custom mounts. It would be a cool swap in my opinion, I've been thinking about doing it with a Corolla. At any rate, you could use a Celica GT tranny, the issue will be making the stock ECU happy with no auto tranny attached to it. So you have two options, well three actually:

Figure out where to wire in some resistors so that the ECU things there is an auto tranny there
Get a V6 5-speed ECU
Go standalone (Megasquirt?)

Other than that it won't be bad at all.

I don't think it would be that hard to get a v6 5spd ecu... huh? how much do those run $-wise?

Will a gt tranny be able to handle the increased power? What about power to the wheels? I don't want to snap anything or warp the frame because there's more power that what the car was built for. Then again- same frame is for the 3s and that has even MORE power. AR AR AR!

well.. I was thinking of this as a good swap because A-getting it for 200 bucks, My engine has 220k miles and might need a new engine someday, C-haven't heard of many people doing it, D-want to try greater displacement, E-want to try turbo with a V6.

Oh yeah, did I mention I'd want to turbo it?
Thoughts? Ponders?

I don't know, did that engine even come with a 5-speed? hehhe

And sure it can handle it, the GT trannys handle 3SGTEs all day long.

If you're going to turbo it, skip ahead and get yourself a Megasquirt setup! :D

yes the 2nd gen camrys had 5speeds for the 3sfe and the 2vzfe
